Overview

One of the differences between SIEPR and other institutes or centers is the emphasis placed on training undergraduate and graduate students. The institute plays an important role in educating these students for careers in economic policy evaluation. A large percentage of the budget supports graduate students as research assistants to SIEPR scholars. These research assistantships are more than just jobs for graduate students; they provide the preparation necessary for the next generation of policy economists. SIEPR also provides dissertation fellowship support for outstanding students to complete their Ph.D. degrees.

The Harry and Lynde Bradley Foundation, the Kapnick Fellowship Fund, the Kohlhagen Fund, and the B. F. Haley and E. S. Shaw Fund are just a few of the foundations and individuals who contribute resources so that SIEPR can fund fellowships.

SIEPR indirectly influences the economics education of California high school students by sponsoring an annual summer workshop for high school teachers of economics. The weeklong program has a 15-year history and is free to participating teachers. It updates their knowledge of current important economic issues and allows them to share effective teaching techniques. Through this program, SIEPR contributes to the improvement of economic literacy in American society.
