General Research Program
John B. Shoven,
Director
The General Research Program is funded largely with unrestricted money and is broad in scope. It is the one program that is not necessarily topic oriented. The program also houses SIEPR Research Initiatives—major focus areas of interest and funding. Two important goals of the General Research Program are funding for junior faculty and support of graduate students. Through SIEPR’s support, junior faculty are able to pursue their research endeavors. Graduate student support and fellowships are also a significant part of this program.
One such example is work being done by David McKenzie. With his seed grant funding from SIEPR, McKenzie is investigating the impact of the current financial crisis in Argentina on households and workers. He is acquiring a vast database of household expenditures previously unused by academics that will enable him to better understand the consequences of the Argentine crisis.
Under the General Research Program Nobel laureate Kenneth Arrow and faculty Lawrence Goulder will lead a research initiative on the Environment, the Economy, and Sustainable Welfare, in an effort to obtain information relevant to the long-range planning and well-being of our society. The initiative has been awarded a $1.5 million grant by the Hewlett Foundation.
In addition, the General Research
Program funds a series of informal weekly lunch forums
at SIEPR. Attracting economists from across the campus,
this forum helps SIEPR fulfill its mission of providing
for collaboration between economic researchers. It has
proven to be invaluable in disseminating new research
directions and results.
