Summary:

Adoption of ideas in networks with positive and negative ties.

We will study the dynamics in networks with positive and negative ties in order understand the emergence of socio political change. In such networks, positive ties can denote support, or positive sentiment, while negative ties denote opposition and negative sentiment. Using our large scale Twitter and social media data we will be create such networks and study their structure and dynamics. Based on sentiment analysis on our massive news and social media data we will create networks of positive and negative relationships and quantify their dynamics. In the next step we will then focus: (1) identify structural conditions for an idea or a piece of information to quickly spread and reach wide adoption in the network; (2) connect these conditions to the study of dynamics of networks with positive and negative edges; (3) study the organization and emergence of factions or opposing coalitions in such networks.
