Scott Terando was named chief actuary of CalPERS in January 2017. He has been with CalPERS since 2003 and brings nearly two decades of experience to his position, including serving as the interim chief actuary in 2016.
Scott provides planning, organization, direction, and evaluation of the Actuarial Office's work, and ensures that all actuarial functions are performed with independence and in conformance with professional standards. He is also a principal advisor on actuarial policies related to pension and health benefit funding and, as a member of the CalPERS senior management team, participates in enterprise-wide strategic planning. He advises the CalPERS Board of Administration.
Scott previously served in a number of other leadership capacities at CalPERS, including deputy chief actuary and before that, supervising pension actuary over the technology unit in CalPERS' Actuarial Office.
He is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, and has earned the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst.
Scott holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan.
